Everybody lives…and it is horrible!

I’ve been watching Torchwood, a UK spinoff of Dr. Who although none of the Dr.s are in it and the show is very different. Dr. Who would never turn as dark as Torchwood, even given the many times the earth, solar system, or galaxy has been barely saved by the Dr.

Brutal! But season four has a well-developed premise. Everyone on earth suddenly becomes incapable of dying. The results are catastrophic on every level. Although the show doesn’t make much of an effort to make the plot scientifically believable, it is nonetheless psychologically believable. The depiction of cultural and psychological responses to everyone suddenly becoming immortal (but not unbreakable) raises a lot of issues about how we think about life, death, and sickness. It could have been a really silly premise, but the writers made it worthwhile.
